I know it can be a pain to rearrange your Windows desktop icons rather it be after playing a game or for some reason or another your screen resolution changes. Well, after scouring the Interwebs for a solution, I found this:

Basically, there’s a file called Layout.dll that was from the Windows NT Resource pack that saves and restores the desktop icon positions. When you download the package, you get that file and a registry file. You put the Layout.dll file into your “c:\Windows\system32 folder and then activate the registry change. After that, you get 2 new options in your right-click context menu on the desktop to Save or Restore your layout.

The Main Reason for Posting this

Some users say it doesn’t work. I experienced that myself on XP until I realized that it does indeed save the locations partially. I deduced that it was automatically shifting some icons around, therefore it must be an automated process. Turns out, for those who are finding this solution not working, make sure you disable Auto Arrange and Align to Grid for your desktop. After that, it’s peachy keen.
