Because if you’re not thinking for yourself and not speaking for yourself, someone else will do it for you. And in most cases, not in your favor. If there’s one thing you won’t get to do as a minority in white America, it’s to represent yourself completely.
I think this is what Bruce Lee was really trying to get at. Everyone just wants to see him kick ass, but what was it that he really conquered? Why was he so appealing? If you walked this earth never having stood up for yourself, and one day you defeat the giant, then by god, that’s the feeling of liberation. You are no longer oppressed. No shadowy figure will ever hold you down again.
Stand up for yourself. Do something. Otherwise, lie to yourself until you have enough courage to say something, but maybe by then it’s too late. If you are truly ever free… to do.
