So I have this theory. When you see too many of the same face look over and over, it’s because someone at the top of the Hollywood food chain’s got a personal bias for that look. Either it’s a personal thing, or it’s purely business and they’re just recycling it over and over for profit. They do it to men, too, but I just want to focus on the women for this blog (ie, Brad Pitt/Robert Redford, Clooney/Grant, etc).

Is there some kind of beauty playbook out there? I’m not saying the women I’ve been listing aren’t attractive, but I’m sure there are a bazillion combinations of phenotypes out there.

Ha! The Chinese have a standard, too! This is what the Chinese filmmakers want Americans to lust over.
And then the Americans tell the Chinese that they should lust over American-chosen Joan Chen’s and Vivian Wu’s.
If you really want to study the standards (beauty or not), watch what kinds of typecasts they play.

Wow. What’s going on here?
These are some of the top “brown” ladies of music. What does this mean about standards for brown women? Their voices are distinctive enough, but in order to sell a product, the visual aspect of it is important.

No mention of Julie Newmar. But then again, the Brits also had their Avengers Emma Peel. Whatever works I guess.

To counter Sherman, here’s someone I’m sure some of you models might also admire.
I didn’t think it was possible to make Tina Fey sexy, but goes to show the media professionals proved me wrong. I’ll get to her significance to the beauty industry later. It has more to do with her work in SNL than her looks.

Cindy Sherman’s work annoys me, but I have to make a mention to sound smart.
There’s some discussion about the feminist aspect of her work. But I don’t want to dive into that stuff. Just be wary that it does, in fact, affect a lot of what you see today on CW and other teen dramas.
